The Fediverse (Federated Universe) is made up of thousands of servers which are mostly managed by individuals and small teams.
These servers can range from microblogging services (like Twitter), to video sharing sites (like PeerTube) and everything in between.
Even this website is part of the Fediverse!
And all of these sites and services are integrated with each other, unlike Twitter, Instagram, TikTok which are walled gardens.
